If you want to work on health in Belgium and not in a hospital, where do you look? 360 companies on our Impact Map work on health, and 60 of them sit in Ghent, more than in any other city in the country. This is the map, and what they hire for besides scientists.

What counts as a health impact job

A role at a company whose product improves health outcomes or access to care. A hospital job is something else, and it matters just as much. The test is the one we use everywhere on this site: when the company grows, do more people get healthier?

That includes companies developing treatments and the ones making care cheaper to reach, which is a wider group than the word biotech suggests.

360 companies, the smallest of the three areas

As of 14 October 2026, 360 of the 1,647 companies on our Impact Map work on health. Counted by region, Brussels has the most with 89. Counted by city, Ghent leads with 60. The city of Brussels has 35 and Leuven 30. Antwerp has 24, and after that it spreads out.

Why Ghent

The usual explanation is the university and its spin-offs. Nothing in our data can confirm or deny it.

What I can show you is the result: a city where you can change employer in life sciences without changing your commute. Leuven is next on the list with half as many health companies, and Brussels has more in total but spreads them over the whole region.

If you work in life sciences and you’re looking at Belgium, start with Ghent.

Five names to start with

XEOS builds imaging that reduces reoperations in cancer surgery, and BiometrIQ does personalised nutrition backed by biomarkers. IntelliProve reads health signals from your face. BloomUp offers mental health support to employees through their employer, and Sundo makes sunscreen impossible to forget.

Imaging, nutrition, diagnostics, mental health, prevention. That’s five companies out of 360, and they already have almost nothing in common. Three of them sit in Ghent: XEOS, BiometrIQ and IntelliProve. BloomUp is in Antwerp and Sundo in Kortrijk.

Care first, science a long way behind

That count also found 398 open roles at the health companies on our map, and 113 of them were care jobs. Operations came second. Research and science came a long way behind with 49.

Most of the roles are neither science nor care: 236 of the 398 carried neither tag. Data and software engineers, medical device engineers, quality and regulatory people, finance, and commercial roles selling into hospitals. I don’t envy that sales cycle.
