What counts as a climate job

A climate job is a job at a company whose product reduces emissions or resource use. If they sell more, less carbon goes into the air. The link is usually visible in one sentence on their homepage. A sustainability role bolted onto a business that would exist anyway doesn’t count, however good the role is.

That rules out a lot of roles with climate in the title. It lets in an installer at a heat pump company who has never used the word.

771 companies, most of them outside the big cities

As of 14 October 2026, 771 of the 1,647 companies on our Impact Map work on climate. Only social impact is bigger, with 807. The Brussels region has 204 climate companies and Ghent 75. Antwerp has 40, which leaves 452 outside the three big cities. That makes climate the most spread out of the three areas. If you only search the big cities, this is where you miss the most. And there are more we haven’t found yet.

Climate isn’t one industry

Ten names from the map show how far it spreads.

Energy first. Companion.energy cuts energy use at large enterprises with AI, and Enersee does the same for buildings.

Joule does bike leasing built for business, and it’s the only mobility company among these ten.

Four of the ten work on reuse and waste. Borro makes reusable cups work with digital deposits and automatic refunds. Dripl puts healthy drinks on tap so that offices stop buying bottles. Waste Warriors gets a farmer’s rejected fruit and veg made into products people buy, and Polysense uses AI vision to cut waste on food production lines.

Then the measuring and reporting. Karomia automates ESG reporting, and every number traces back to where it came from. ResultX focuses on the financial value that reporting brings.

Where those ten sit

Polysense, Karomia, Companion.energy, Joule and Planet B are in Ghent, and Borro and Dripl in Brussels. Enersee and Waste Warriors are in Antwerp. ResultX is in Everberg. Open roles move weekly, so check the map before you trust anything in this article, including the numbers in the next section.

Trades first, then operations and sales

The same count turned up 905 open roles at the climate companies. Trades jobs were the biggest group, 185 of the 905: installers and technicians, mostly.

Operations comes next with 178 roles, and that covers projects, supply chain, field work and installation.

Sales is close behind with 175: account executives and business development. Climate products still have to be sold. A lot of these companies are selling something the buyer has never bought before. I spent four years on it at Dripl, a good part of them on a bike with a tasting box in my backpack.

Then engineers on the software side and the hardware side. Data roles come a long way after that: 27 of the 905 carry a data tag.
